Comfort Emmanson, the Ibom Air passenger involved in a viral video assaulting the airline's crew, will remain in prison until October 6, 2025. Here's what led to her remand ¹:
- *Incident*: The altercation began when Emmanson refused to switch off her mobile phone before takeoff from Uyo to Lagos, despite instructions from the flight crew. A fellow passenger eventually turned off the phone, triggering a furious reaction from Emmanson.
- *Charges*: She faces a five-count charge bordering on assault and wilful damage to property, including:
- *Assaulting flight crew members*: Emmanson allegedly shouted at the top of her voice, abused and assaulted the crew, and refused to disembark from the aircraft after landing.
- *Damaging property*: She allegedly damaged an aircraft divider curtain valued at $2,500 and tore a braided wig worth N110,000 belonging to one of the crew members.
- *Physical assault*: Emmanson allegedly slapped a purser and hit another passenger, Jokpame Sagun, in the face with her slippers.
- *Consequences*: Apart from her prison sentence, Ibom Air has imposed a travel restriction on her, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has placed her on its "no fly" list indefinitely.
- *Reactions*: The Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, condemned the release of indecent footage of Emmanson, while Presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized the treatment meted out to her, citing double standards in Nigeria's justice system ² ¹ ³.
