Alabama Family Searches for Missing Son During Japan Vacation Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

June 04, 2026 · By shareops

A family from Alabama is urgently appealing for help after their 20-year-old son disappeared during a family vacation in Japan, triggering an extensive search operation involving local authorities, volunteers, and international agencies.

The young man, James Higginbotham, who is commonly known as Weston, went missing in Kyoto after separating from his family during their trip. According to his mother, Nancy Higginbotham, Weston is an experienced traveler who often enjoys spending time on his own, particularly in natural environments and outdoor locations.

The family had already spent several days exploring Japan and had visited cities including Tokyo before arriving in Kyoto. Their trip began on May 22 and was intended as a celebration for Weston’s younger brother following his high school graduation.

Missing During Solo Exploration in Kyoto

On May 29, Weston decided to spend some time exploring Kyoto independently while other family members planned to visit a nearby temple. His mother explained that he occasionally preferred having personal space and enjoyed discovering places on his own.

Initially, there was little concern because solo exploration was not unusual for him. However, the situation quickly became alarming after his phone location unexpectedly became unavailable.

Nancy Higginbotham said she immediately sensed that something was wrong.

As hours passed without contact, concern grew rapidly, leading authorities to begin a wider search effort in the region.

Search Efforts Continue in Mountainous Areas of Japan

Rescue operations are reportedly focusing on forested and mountainous areas near Kyoto, locations that align with Weston's known interests and outdoor lifestyle.

The search has become increasingly difficult due to severe weather conditions, including a typhoon affecting parts of the area. Japanese police, civilian search teams, and the FBI have reportedly joined efforts to locate the missing student.

His family remains determined and says they have no plans to leave Japan until he is found.

"We are staying until Weston is located," his mother said during an emotional plea for help.

Auburn University Student Passionate About Nature

Weston is currently studying environmental engineering at Auburn University and is described by his family as deeply connected to nature and outdoor activities.

His mother explained that he has significant experience in wilderness environments and adventure travel. He has reportedly completed solo hiking experiences in Europe and regularly participated in activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and white-water rafting with family members.

Friends and family describe him as someone who loves nature, values environmental conservation, and feels most comfortable outdoors.

Family Continues Hopeful Search for Missing Son in Japan

As search teams continue their efforts, family members remain hopeful for positive news.

The disappearance has gained increasing attention as people around the world follow updates on the ongoing search and hope for Weston’s safe return.

Authorities continue to investigate all possibilities while rescue teams work through challenging terrain and weather conditions.

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww The first major computer virus to originate from the Philippines was called the ILOVEYOU virus.Key Details About the OutbreakAlternative Names: It is also widely known as the "Love Bug" or the "Love Letter" worm.Release Date: The virus was unleashed on May 4, 2000.The Creator: It was coded by Onel de Guzman, a 24-year-old computer science student at AMA Computer College in Manila. The Motive: De Guzman later admitted that he did not intend to cause global chaos. He created the malware strictly to steal internet passwords so he could access dial-up internet services for free. How It WorkedThe Bait: Victims received an email with the subject line "ILOVEYOU".The Trap: The email contained a malicious attachment disguised as a text file, named "LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.txt.vbs".The Damage: Once clicked, the script automatically sent a copy of itself to every contact in the victim's Microsoft Outlook address book. It then began overwriting local files, including JPEGs and MP3s.The Global ImpactWithin just days, it infected over 45 million computers globally, representing roughly 10% of all internet-connected computers at the time. It caused an estimated $5.5 to $10 billion in damages. Major institutions—including the Pentagon, the CIA, and the British Parliament—had to completely shut down their mail systems to contain the spread.Interestingly, De Guzman was never prosecuted because the Philippines had no laws against cybercrime or malware creation at the time. The incident forced the Philippine government to quickly enact the E-Commerce Act of 2000 to close this legal loophole.
